Even though each artist brings to the table a style and technique that is uniquely there own, we feel that together they truly shine and are honored to display their works for all to discover and enjoy.
Kathie Olivas bio / statement:
Kathie Olivas is a multi-media artist who resides in Tampa, FL. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the nation.
Kathie Olivas’ current body of work, entitled the "Misery Children" series, focuses on the constant social desire to assign "cuteness." This often serves as a means to make something innocent and more appealing, therefore, non-threatening. Perhaps this allows us to comfort ourselves. My questions are based on the discomfort of "what if"-- what if these sweet creatures had other ideas? What if they knew something we were afraid to open our eyes to? Would they protect themselves; would they be able to adapt to a war torn environment and develop their own defense mechanisms? The characters are meant to evoke a nostalgic reaction that reflects isolation, fear, and an uncertainty; yet, at the same time they serve as empowered alter egos. This series is presented as a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality. The characters perform as narrators in lonely worlds that each explores individually, creating his or her own perspective, and thus, own reality. As our hosts, the ensemble provides a sense of comfort; the reminiscent style is soothing, yet the mood is dark. As children, they evoke a sense of temporality; childhood serves as a starting ground, a place where things begin.
Inspired by early American portraiture that often depicted children as small adults in an idealized new land, the characters parallel this vision within their own sense of post-apocalyptic conformity, uniquely documenting their own stories in a mysterious brave new world.

Brooke Reidt bio / statement:
Home can’t be mapped. I keep my suitcase packed and I’m nearly a quarter of a century old. I’ve moved more times than I have fingers and toes to count on, so I’ve quit counting and I now embrace all my sojourns, adopting a somewhat habitual transient way in the process. If home is where the heart is, my anchor is rusting in my art. My paintings are visceral maps and short breathes between suffocation. My intention is to defy flightless fables, continue the contagion of adoration and timeless preservation of my indefatigable inamorata integrity.
Brooke is a unique and kindred spirit with untold amounts of talent and a knack for surprises. She has also been a very strong contributor to the Volcom Art Pool for the last couple of years, with her own signature shirt hitting shelves this past summer.

Julie West bio / statement:
Julie West graduated in 1998 with a BFA in illustration. Since this time, she has worked as illustrator and painter. She recently moved from the United States to Great Britain. Julie's work relies heavily on people and environments. Often quirky, bizarre, or ironic, she looks heavily at the way people live and define themselves, as well as the environments which they create for themselves. Studying these details, often reveals the unique moments that make us human.
Julie works both traditionally, with gouache, acrylic, ink, cut paper and fabric - as well as digitally.
